Uncertain Prospects

A photoreportage about refugees living in the asylum center Wil

July 2018, Wil

In 2018 I created a photo reportage about the daily life of refugees, who were living in a regional asylum center in Wil.

At this stage of the asylum procedure they are waiting for the decision of their asylum application. Either they can stay in Switzerland or they have to leave the country without any certainty of security. The people I met lived in this centre for up to 4 years until they received their decision. During this time they were not legally allowed to work and were therefore socially isolated. The prohibition to work, as well as the uncertainty whether Switzerland will grant them asylum or not, is psychologically extremely stressful. With this photo reportage, I would like to draw attention to the difficult circumstances in which these people live.

Political changes are essential to improve the lives of people living in regional asylum centers. By implementing reforms that speed up the decision-making process, enable refugees to work, prioritize mental health, and promote an inclusive environment, governments can effectively address the immense psychological pressures faced by these vulnerable people. By recognizing the importance of political changes in addressing the needs of refugees, we can strive towards a more compassionate and equitable society for all.
